There are so many different kind of Bikers.
I have seen many long distance bikers and you wouldn't believe what they bike with.
One 65 year old man biked from Mexico to Colombia on a girl's bike with no crossbar and all his belongings stuffed into a backpack.
Another one biked through Central America with a roadracing bike and 3 kg (7 lbs.) of luggage. He was shaking his head in disbelief when he saw how much I was carrying.
Then there was the guy who bikes around the world with 60 kg (132 lbs.) of gear and who bikes 200 km (125 miles) everyday.
Another one crossed USA with a trailer for his dog.
A homeless man biked with a homemade bicycle and trailer and has been biking like that around USA for 8 years.
A 60 year old couple biked through Central America with a tandem bike, the man being in front......off course! Naturally there was always the occassional fight as to who seems to be pedalling the most.
Some bike in group, two or alone. Personally, I prefer to bike alone, and there are no disputes
and you tend to meet more people.
Ways people bike
Some people bike like Forrest Gump and let things happen without making plans. Others' make plans daily. Some have lots of money and never sleep in a tent or even make their own food. Some have no money and work on the road. Many bike and take their time and want to see the world, not bike fast.
I bike like Forrest Gump with all the time in the world - so that I may get to see the world.
What kind of bike.
I see that a roadracer bikes with a trailer are becoming more and more popular. They tend to go faster and are better for wind resistance. It is especially good when you bike to boring places and want to finish the journey quickly. No problem to bike through Latin America and North America as there are always beautiful sights to see although, maybe not on smaller roads which can be a pretty rough . But highways are good in most places, maybe a little more difficult to find parts for roadrace bikes insome areas. Personally I like my mountainbikewhich covers most conditions.
Where to sleep.
I mostly never have to pay for a bed. Very often I tend to sleep in the woods beside the road, in parks, behind gas stations, a bar or ask a farmer or house owner if I may sleep in their garden, beach, beach..
I always try to hide when I sleep so that people or police don't see me. Sometimes I wait for darkness or until I am alone so no people see where I pitch my tent. If many see where I camp they may try to rob me at nighttime. But despite all the crime you hear about I have felt safe everywhere I have been.
Safety.
I never show money, anywhere always giving the impression of being poor. I keep my bike dirty, except for the sprockets and chain, keep my camera and MP3 player etc hidden.
I have learnt not to listen to warnings from people anymore because they are scared of everything. Media mostly write about bad things, but the world is not so bad. I have found people almost everywhere to be extremely friendly.
